Becoming the “Greywolf”

Becoming the “Greywolf”

I had always loved the wolf ever since I were a little girl. I was fortunate enough to know of a man whom was my father’s friend. He used to keep animals. Almost train them I suppose to do his bidding.

My father and the rest of his friends always used to call him the “animal man”. He would raise them from young, be it bird, cat, dog, any animal. Of course my favourite was the wolf. That animal had always fascinated me and we had certainly seen plenty of them with our wandering lifestyle.

There was always one in particular that the man regarded as his companion. A large grey wolf, a female, she was beautiful. I would always try as a child to get close and watch her every movement.

I would never let on to my father or indeed the other man my love for these animals. It made no difference as they already knew how I felt.

It would be in the summer of my 16th year when I would receive one has a companion, to love and cherish, to look after for myself and teach.

Naerna I would call her, a small at the time, young wolf pup. She was beautiful, I would say the most beautiful creature I had ever set my eyes upon.

The “animal man” had always known my love of these animals, so too did my father. They had both said that day that they had seen and watched me over the years with the pup’s mother. How I had been enthralled with her, and even though he would say nothing at the time, my father had always known when I had crept away from our camp at night to go visit her.

Thus a friendship would begin which has lasted all these years. I have found a companion in Naerna. Someone to love, someone to look out for, and in turn look out for me. My father had always known, the “animal man” had always known.

That day six years ago now, they both gave me a new name, a name which has stuck with me ever since…………. That name was “Greywolf”
