We will move on at first light. I have no more time to give to Esteldin and its Wardens at present. We make for the Tinnunudir lake, set west beyond the burial mounds of the Wardens. Godric must make the best of it that he can. He will protest, but it is better to leave now than before he falls into futher folly with that girl. For me, a pleasure to see its cold waters again.
The small folk are unsettled this night. Another argument breaks out amongst them, seeming from nothing. The children fret in their sleep. They react, like frightened cattle, but they do not know what troubles them or what walks on the edge of their dreams. They are blessed then, in their ignorance.
The Wardens, at gate and walls... they sense it. Upon the walls they stand, like stone upon stone, as though nothing could move them. But I see the flicker in their sharp grey eyes. Something moves abroad in the gloom, something that sends its questing dark to lesser minds, something that - were these Wardens able to lower their pride and ask a stranger - I would put a name to.
